.01 Radiant Heaters

1. Consider only for areas with high ceiling and low ventilation areas.
2. Do not use in office areas.

   Radiant heating equipment is strongly discouraged, and any proposed applications shall be reviewed and approved by OPP. The Designer shall be mindful of the following considerations:

   1. Ceiling-mounted radiant heating is not acceptable due to thermal stratification in the space.

   2. Wall-mounted radiant panels may be considered for certain applications for both heating and cooling, but their use is subject to review and approval by Engineering Services.

   3. Radiant heating often requires high source temperatures for effective heat transfer.  These elevated temperatures may be incompatible with the University's energy strategies and limit the applicability of hot water as a radiant heating source.

   4. Radiant heating with hot water is generally not effective due to low operating temperatures. The University’s energy goals may also influence the variability of heating hot water plant operational temperatures.

   5. Heating with electric resistance is generally discouraged as there are more cost-effective methods for heating.

   6. In-floor piping systems are costly to install and repair.
