11 13 00 LOADING DOCK

FACILITIES
  • Loading dock truck bumpers shall be molded rubber or of the type that employs the use of laminated tire cording held together with galvanized bolts passing through cording and attached by heavy galvanized metal angles securely anchored to the structure.
  • The Professional's attention is directed to the installation at loading docks and shipping and receiving areas where a canopy or roof structure may interfere with the loading and unloading of freight.  The height of loading dock platforms and the height of overhead structures should be such that trucks may gain access to the dock in both loaded and unloaded conditions, compatible with facility use requirements.

    EQUIPMENT

    Bumpers:

    1. Shall be laminated style, constructed of fabric reinforced rubber (recycled truck tires).  Rubber Pads/Slats are stacked between 3/8 inch steel plates and held together with 3/4 inch steel support tie rods that are welded to steel angle at both sides and go through rubber pads/slats tying bumper together.  Installation method shall be horizontal style.  Use hardware as recommended by manufacturer.
      1. Dimensions:
        1. Minimum width of no less than 12 inches
        2. 10 inches high is preferable
        3.  Minimum project of 4 inches, Maximum projection of 6 inches
    2. All exposed steel shall be powder coated black.
    3. Hardware shall be galvanized or stainless steel.

    Levelers:

    1. Pit Style, Fully Hydraulic Dock Levelers with lip extension and easy push button operation are preferred.
    2. Frame and platform support shall be constructed of structural “C” channel.  Platform support shall be entire length and fully welded.
    3. Platform shall be constructed of 1/4 inch thick, 50,000 lb. minimum yield steel safety tread plate.  Lip shall be 1/2 inch thick steel safety tread plate and 16 inches deep.
    4. Platform shall be raised by a main hydraulic cylinder.  Main Cylinder shall be hard chrome-plated, double acting with a 3” ID bore and equipped with a velocity fuse, safety stop to limit free fall to 3” (+/- 1”).  Lip operation shall be controlled by a hard chrome-plated cylinder having a 2” ID bore.  All hydraulic hoses shall be routed under the leveler platform
    5. Unit shall have a working range of 12 inches above to 12 inches below concrete dock surface preferred.
    6. Supply a hydraulic pump motor as recommended by manufacturer.  Pump motor shall be mounted on frame, up off the ground.  Reservoir shall be translucent for monitoring fluid level.
    7. A single push button remote that controls all stages of operation preferred.
    8. Currently, there is no minimum or maximum size and lift capacity for levelers.  Each instance will vary depending on building type and function.

     

    General Notes:

    1. Acceptable manufacturers are McGuire (preferred), Pioneer Dock Equipment,

    Rite-Hite, and Advance Lifts.

         2.Shall be factory painted and color shall be factory standard.  Some manufacturers offer other color selections.  Consult with University Architect.

         3.For loading dock structure, see Division 03 00 00 – Concrete (the information on this sheet if for loading dock equipment and accessories only).

         4.Levelers shall meet or exceed the following requirements:

      1. U.S. Department of Commerce Standard CS-202-56
      2. Conform to OSHA
      3. ANSI MH 30.1

     

    Warranty:

    1. This will vary between manufacturers.  Penn State asks that at least a 1-year base warranty begins upon the completion of installation.  Additional warranty extensions may be available, consult with manufacturer.

    Any exceptions/substitutes must be approved by the Penn State Project Manager.
