.00 General

Doors from frequently used spaces such as toilet rooms, classrooms, etc. that swing out in the direction of egress from the frequently used space shall not swing into a corridor in a manner that the door could come into contact with someone walking in the corridor or were where code required min. egress width could be reduced.  This typically means a recess for the door swing is needed in the corridor.


.01 Exterior Door Frames
    1. Prominent building entrance opening(s)  shall provide aluminum frames when part of the facilities’ storefront
      1. Aluminum Alloy shall be 6063-T5 (min.), T6 preferred
      2. Aluminum frame extrusions shall be thermally broken with a web design
      3. U-factor shall be a minimum as prescribed in the current adopted IECC [International Energy Conservation Code] for the PA region installed
      4. Sections G-M below may apply
      5. Hot rolled for aluminum 6063 alloy
      6. Frame shall accept flush glazing from inside
      7. Threshold shall be matched to door type
      8. Thickness shall be a minimum 1-3/4” deep
      9. High performance sill flashing
      10. Screw spline fabrication
      11. Non- grouted [special circumstances only with prior approval for grouted]

    2. Secondary entrance frames shall be aluminum or hollow metal at a minimum
        1. Hollow metal galvanized heavy duty 16 gauge welded frames
        2. Aluminum shall follow  section A above
    3. Agricultural buildings may use fiberglass reinforced frames (FRP) preferred or hollow metal galvanized frames
    4. Residence Halls  [check with Housing & Foods Services designated representatives (H&FS and/or Design & Construction’s project leader) for additional requirements beyond this Standard
    5. Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester  [ FRP ] doors  when combined with FRP frames in Ag. Buildings depending on extenuating circumstances
    6. Historical buildings frames [as approved on an individual basis by authorized  Penn State Physical Plant representative]
      1. Historical replacement frames shall match existing in form, style, material/species and color.

        1. Replacement vestibule frames shall also match existing
        2. Thickness shall be a minimum of 1-3/4 inches [might be location dependent]
    7. Performance              (as per the current applicable IECC code requirements for Region)  
    8. Air infiltration           (as per the current applicable IECC code requirements for Region)
    9. Design pressure         (as per the current applicable IECC code requirements for Region)
    10. U-factor                      (as per the current applicable IECC code requirements for Region )
    11. Water test pressure (as per the current applicable IECC code requirements for Region)
    12. Forced entry frames [special applications] shall follow all applicable ASTM Standards
    13. Finishes – factory anodized [ meeting AAMA 611 standards ] or in special circumstances with a Kynar 500 Fluoropolymer coating depending on aesthetic end use as discussed with Penn State University Architect when project applicable.
      1. Anodized shall be class 1 (clear, bronze, black which might be project specific)
    14. Cold rolled for steel frames
    15. Hot rolled for aluminum 6063 alloy
    16. Full flush seamless
    17. Non- grouted [special circumstances only with prior approval for grouted]

.02 Exterior Doors
    1. Main Entrance Storefront doors (aluminum)
      1. Pairs of doors (suitable for high traffic areas)
      2. Single doors (suitable for high traffic areas)
      3. Able to accept continuous gear hinge
      4. Strike anchored to frame
      5. Continuous weather stripping at strike
      6. Dual moment welded (continuous welded) corners
      7. Welded at shear block using deep penetration
      8. Life cycle test from independent third party
      9. Rabbited rail at jamb hinge
      10. Minimum 10-inch bottom rail
      11. Minimum  5-inch top rail & side rail
      12. Wide stile on prominent building entrance & secondary entrance(s) when applicable
      13. Performance (as per current applicable code requirements for region)
      14. Design pressure (as per current applicable code requirements for region)
      15. U-factor (as per current applicable code requirements for region)
      16. Water test pressure (as per current applicable code requirements for region)
      17. Air infiltration maximum allowed (as per current applicable code requirements for region)
      18. Forced entry doors (as per current applicable code requirements for region)
      19. Minimize joining frame to adjoining steel members using steel fasteners as to minimize galvanic corrosion
      20. Min. 2-years on door, lifetime on corner weld
      21. Anodizing meets requirements of  AAMA 612 [ if applicable to exterior end use ]
      22. Finishes - factory anodized [ meeting AAMA 611 standards ] or in special circumstances with a Kynar 500 Fluoropolymer coating depending on aesthetic end use as discussed with University Architect when project applicable
        1. Anodized  shall be class 1 (clear, bronze, black which might be project specific)
      23. Hot rolled for 6063 alloy
      24. Recycled content to meet LEED recommendations when applicable
      25. Doors taller than  9/0 are not recommended for high pedestrian applications
      26. Steel doors on prominent entrances not permitted except as approved by Penn State Physical Plant representative
      27. Door hardware limitations to follow manufacture’s recommendations
      28. Glazing - see also section 08 80 00 for additional information
    2. Main entrance doors, wood
      1. Historical buildings
        1. 2-1/4 inch mahogany [ particular species,  African or South American shall be discussed with Penn State Physical Plant representative and/or approved Historical Representative ]
      2. Other special applications may warrant further consideration within Penn State’s  Historical District as defined in the Federal Register
        1.  Doors/frames shall match existing in form, style, material and color.
      3. Vestibule doors/frames shall match existing in form, style, material and color.
      4. Where wood frames are present with no overhead projection area, metal tube jams shall be placed in the vertical and covered by matching wood trim.
    3. Secondary entrance doors  [steel/hollow metal]
      1. Door shall be min 16 gauge galvanized
      2. Insulated (urethane or styrene)
      3. 7 gauge hinge reinforcement
      4. 12 gauge closer reinforcement
      5. Frame
        1. 14 gauge galvanized
        2. welded units w/ 7 gauge hinge reinforcement
        3. 10 gauge strike reinforcement galvanized steel
      6. Performance, air infiltration, Design pressure, U-factor, water test pressure, forced entry shall follow current applicable IECC code requirements for Region

                         d.  Mechanical room doors (exterior) same as C. above

                         e.  Vestibule doors

      1. To match entrance door requirements above ( aluminum or steel above )

.03    Glazing

  1. Glass shall be minimum double pane
  2. Insulated glass shall be 1-inch min.
  3. Solar Ban 60 #2 or Cardinal 272 #2
  4. Solar Ban 70 #2 or Cardinal 270 #2
  5. Solar ban 90 #2  or Cardinal 340 #3 [as prior approved by Physical Plant]
  6. Solar heat gain (SHGC) and efficiency rating(s) shall be (as per the current applicable IECC code requirements for Region)
  7. See Glazing Standard’s section and/or as approved by Penn State Physical Plant representative

.04   Governing Standards

  1. All Standards that apply to installation shall be followed for metal or aluminum assemblies
  2. All applicable current code governing Pennsylvania and Penn State shall apply

Approved exterior storefront/doors

  1. Kawneer
  2. YKK
  3. EFCO
  4. Special design circumstances may warrant other manufacturers, which shall be pre-approved by authorized Penn State Physical Plant representative

 

Approved exterior mechanical room, isolated emergency egress etc. doors

  1. CECO
  2. Steelcraft
  3. Mesker
  4. Special-Lite, Eliason Fiberglass Reinforced Polyester (FRP) doors/frames [ in extenuating instances i.e  Ag bldgs.,  no overhead protection areas, exterior mechanical room doors,  etc. ] .  

Approved Residence Hall prominent entrance doors with storefronts  [new construction]

  1. Kawneer
  2. YKK
  3. EFCO
  4. Special design circumstances may warrant other manufacturers, which shall be pre-approved by authorized Penn State Physical Plant representative
  5. FRP/AMP doors as prior approved by Housing & Food Services for existing replacement doors/frames that will meet the Facility’s requirements
  6. Contact Penn State Physical Plant’s project manager for additional Housing & Foods requirements and for any H&FS replacement door/frame Standards

Approved vestibule doors

  1. In new building’s vestibule doors shall match exterior door manufacturer
  2. In building renewals (level 3 alteration)  new vestibule doors shall match style of exterior doors and or existing vestibule doors
  3. Replaced vestibule doors shall be meet the buildings’ pedestrian volume demand (i.e. high, moderate, light)

As with all approved doors for the opening type, substitutes will be evaluated on its merits for the opening’s application upon prior approval from authorized Penn State Physical Plant representative.

Hardware acceptance

  1. Doors shall be prepped from the factory to accept the scheduled hardware.
  2. Frames shall be prepped at factory to accept the scheduled hardware.
  3. All door hardware shall meet the Design & Construction 08 71 00 standards

NOTE: Historic wood doors/frames are preferably fabricated by Penn State Physical Plant’s Carpenter Shop which has records of materials, sizes and colors.

 

Product Assurance

       i.          Any "door failure" under normal day to day operation, that occurs during the specific warranty period and which impedes the intended function of the door's integrity/performance, shall be inspected in a timely manner by the manufacturer's representative and a viable resolution presented to the owner [ Penn State ].

      ii.          This standard does not exclude technological advances in the market place where alternative products will substantiate a documented proven top-quality exterior door/frame suited for this climatic region and particular Facility’s requirements, upon prior approval from Penn State Physical Plant.

     iii.          Any substitutions shall require prior approval from an authorized Penn State Physical Plant representative before project bid deadline(s).

     iv.          Emergency door/frame replacements shall attempt to meet this Standard when applicable.

      v.          Glazing  [color/tint, style] within door replacements at existing openings shall meet Glazing Standard’s section and/or as approved by Penn State Physical Plant representative. Emergency glazing repairs shall attempt to meet the Physical Plant’s 08 80 00 Standard when applicable.
